Message from the General Manager

I put 192 miles on my snowmobile Sunday, most of them on purpose, and the trails are really good up here right now. Fortune Bay offers some great room rates during the winter to help get you up for an offseason visit so go to their newly revised website to book a trip now.

We will once again be at the Minnesota Golf Show February 17th-19th and I encourage you to stop by for a visit. If you wear something that has our logo showing we will give you a gift for doing so. It has been interesting attending that show year after year and to hear there are still folks that have not made the trip up to visit. When the roads are good it only takes 3.5 hours to get here from where the 35’s come together on the north end of the cities.

We will be continuing our hole in one challenge for 2017. We started this promotion in the 2016 season where a $5 or $10 purchase wins you $10K or $20K with a hole in one on hole number 17. There is a live camera feed that shows both the tee box and green to verify the event. This means you should not use the bushes near that tee to avoid being famous for the wrong reason. We did give away $10K to Joe Zika as he made a $5 purchase August 16th and he had his first ever hole in one! The video of the event is worth a watch. KemperSports has also extended our ability to reward any hole in one on the golf course with a trip for two to Mexico! Prize winners will receive a five day, four night, complimentary stay for two guests at the AAA Four Diamond Grand Mayan Nuevo Vallarta or Grand Mayan PuertoPeñasco (excludes airfare and transportation).

There will be a lot of great things happening this year so I encourage you to plan your visit now!

I appreciate your business.

Message from the Head Golf Pro

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and had a chance to spend some good time with family and friends.  I am looking forward to 2017 for what exciting things will come and hope this New Year brings great things to you as well!

The great thing about the New Year is that the golf season is just a few months away.  The bad part - January through March can make for some long months!   That being said, it is also the time of year where many people get a chance to take a vacation (to somewhere warm for those in the North) and enjoy some rest and relaxation, which for many of you may be a round of golf or two.

My (working) vacation this year is my annual pilgrimage to the PGA Merchandise Show.  The week will be spent attending the Demo day and meeting with vendors to see the latest lines of clothing and accessories for the upcoming season.  I also make a point to look for some new things, whether it is a new clothing line or something for the course that will enhance your next visit to The Wilderness.  The show is also a great place to attend some seminars to further enhance my knowledge of the golf industry.

If you can’t get away this year you can always attend one of the golf shows that will be happening in the next few months.   There are shows in Milwaukee, Chicago and Minneapolis!  If have a chance to get to the Minnesota Golf Show, Feb. 17-19, make sure to stop by The Wilderness booth and say Hi!

Let’s hope for an early spring so we can start swinging those clubs again!

Happy Golfing!

Message from the Superintendent

I know that most of you will be shocked to know that we can get some pretty cold temperatures in the winter months.  2017 has been no exception to this rule, in that the first week of this year has seen below freezing bone chilling cold.  From a golf course maintenance standpoint, I welcome the sustained cold weather-particularly since we have over a foot of snow cover everywhere to offer insulating protection to the turf.  What we do not want is a huge thaw followed by a hard freeze.  This creates a layer of gas exchange preventing ice that can be deadly to turf.  I feel very good about the design and turf health on the golf course going into the winter having both built and managed it over the past 15 years.  Regardless of the conditions, I feel confident that we will be fine coming out of winter and if any areas do not survive, we will promptly repair them.  I have learned over the years that worrying over that which one has no control over is a fool’s game.  Save your energy for tasks that make a positive difference for your workplace, home, and community.

I have an I.D. question for you animal people out there.  One of the trail cameras on the golf course took this picture sometime in the past few days.  Not sure what this is since there is nothing in the picture to show any scale.  My thought initially is a wolf since we have seen signs before-but I am not sure.  Any help you could offer me with this would be much appreciated.

Wolf or Dog?

Stay warm and please do not hesitate to contact me at vdodge@kempersports.com if you have any questions at all regarding the golf course.

Message from The Chef

January is shaping up to be quite a busy month! On January 27th we are hosting our 2nd annual Italian night. This scrumptious four-course meal includes charcuterie (a delicious rare cheese and cured meat appetizer that will pair beautifully with one of our fine Italian wines), panzanella salad, your choice of entrée, and of course, dessert.

This is also an exciting time for us as we are in the first stages of planning our 2017 summer season menu. Your old favorites like Ale-battered Walleye and Chicken Marsala will be returning, as well as the addition of some new menu items such as sea bass, scallops, and grilled pork tenderloin.

In February, be sure to mark your calendars on the 11th for our Sweethearts Dinner. Take your special someone out and enjoy a beautiful four-course meal including scallops, turnip salad, your choice of entrée, and luscious raspberry-chocolate mousse bombs.

See you soon and Bon Appétit
