Message from the General Manager

I am really excited about the upcoming golf season which starts Friday May 5th!  New this season is our golf app that will help connect you to what goes on here along with giving you some cool features to use when you are on property. As you will read below you get 20 points for just downloading the app!

We have a very busy summer planned so please refer to our calander of events to stay up to date and find the details on exactly what is going on.

Say what you will about Sergio but I was glad to see him win the Masters over the weekend. The Masters is my favorite tournament to watch of the year because it brings back fond memories of when I used to attend the event yearly because I lived so close. My favorite spot to spectate was where drives would land on hole #11. You were able to see the approach on 11 then watch them try and avoid the water on 12 and also their tee shot on 13. Of course it was also pretty handy that a beer tent and restrooms are in close proximity to that area as well.

If you have not called to make your tee times and room reservations yet I would encourage you to do so now as we are closing in on a very busy summer!

I appreciate your business!

Message from the Head Golf Pro

So far we have had a good spring with some pretty nice days.  I know many courses have opened up around the state and hope you had a chance to get in a round or two.  Looking at how the course is thawing out and forecast, it looks like we may open on May 5.  Of course, the weather is the ultimate factor in determining our opening date.  We should be in great shape when we do open as our Maintenance crew will have been hard at work getting the course in excellent spring condition.

With the fishing opener the following weekend it is a great time to come up and get the cabin ready while getting in a round or two.  If don’t have a cabin in the area, it is a great excuse to make the trip up for golf.  Somebody knows someone with a cabin up here!  I won’t tell if you don’t!

Check out these early season events:

City Auto Glass Golf Classic – May 19th – 9 Hole 2-person Charity Scramble

Golf Clinics – beginning May 31st!

Ladies Golf Day – June 5th – 9:00 am Shotgun start

2017 Demo Day!  June 9th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Happy Golfing and see you at The Wilderness soon!

Message from the Superintendent

I am pleased to report that the golf course endured the winter season quite well.  We had some staff on hand to remove covers from putting greens and found, as usual, that the turf underneath was not dead.  It was, in fact, very green and healthy.

3 Green April 7, 2017.  Note burned area in background.

Note the areas of the rough that the greens cover protected from the long winters up here.  These covers really do make a difference but they can have their downsides.  The first downside is the labor involved in both installing and removing the covers.  Labor costs to both install and remove these covers from all putting greens and the practice tee amount to close to $5000 each year.  In these days of tight golf course budgets, this is no sum to laugh at.  In addition, covers can result in some years in excessive growth underneath the covers which results in greens which are tougher to dial in to being the smooth surfaces many of you have come to expect.  This was the case in 2016 when we were unable to remove the covers until April 14th due to weather conditions.  This year we were able to remove the covers on April 3rd and 4th and doing so has allowed us to minimize this problem.  I would like to offer a sincere thank you to all staff that came in to help us to get this done.  I am honored to work with you all.

Another rite of spring at the Wilderness is the open field burning of many of the deep rough fescue areas of the golf course.  Fine leaf fescues which we have in these areas build up large levels of thatch over the years and the only practical way of removing this excessive organic matter is through burning.

Burning fescue behind 16 green.  April 6, 2017

Not only is there an agronomic benefit from this burning but there is also an enhancement to golf course playability after we perform this work.  As many of you know, we have many rock faces in play on the golf course and when the grass gets excessively thick and long it can be very easy to lose a ball in these areas.  This burning serves to clear out these areas of excessive grass accumulation and make finding your ball much easier.

Hole 16.  April 6, 2017

16 is a great example of this as clearing these areas of old growth will make it much easier to find the occasional errant shot.

I am very pleased that this winter is finally over.  While on paper this winter was little different than previous ones, even a typical winter in Tower these days has me feeling like the guy below.

I look forward to working with the crew this spring to bring you the best product we possibly can for the 2017 golf season.  You deserve nothing less.

See you on the golf course,

Message from The Chef

With the snow almost gone, some of our favorite smells are starting to appear.  Fresh cut grass, spring rain, and your neighbor’s charcoal grill firing up.  These are all signs that our May 5th opening date is fast approaching! I honestly can’t wait to get back into the swing of things and see some of your familiar faces, as well as the new customers that have already begun calling us up to set their tee times.

With our short Minnesota summers, if you are looking to set up an event be sure to contact us early so we can book your preferred date.  In addition, we are again hosting our Wednesday Night BBQs with live music as well as three separate Chef Tables throughout the season, one in June, one in July, and one in August.  During these Chef Tables, I will demonstrate how to cook delicious meals that feature ingredients and flavors that take place during that time of the year. Each Chef Table Dinner will only be available to the first twenty people to make reservations, so if this sparks your interest, gives us a call or check out our calendar of events on our websites. In later newsletters, I will go over more on these events and what foods they will be featuring. See you soon!
