INDIAN WELLS CHAMPIONS NEW GAME PLAN FOR GOLF RESORT

Indian Wells, CA —  Indian Wells City Council has given the green light to new routing plans for the East and West courses of the Golf Resort at Indian Wells.  The Council approved the new design layouts submitted by renowned golf course architects Clive Clark and John Fought at the city council meeting on June 2, 2005.  This latest development underscores the city’s determination to proceed as planned with an ambitious renovation of the world-famous Golf Resort, ranked one of the top public access courses in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play 2004-2005.”

“Clive Clark and John Fought were selected to design the new courses because of their individual and complementary styles,” said Roger Behling, golf resort director for the City of Indian Wells.  “They plan to create two 18-hole golf courses that players and tournament groups of all skill levels will want to play when they visit the valley.”

Construction on the West course is set to begin in this month with eradication of Bermuda grass.  Course and greens reconstruction will commence in November 2005 with total course completion scheduled for November of 2006.  Designed by Ryder Cup veteran Clive Clark, the new West course will encompass spectacular water features, including several lakes, creeks and waterfalls.  Water features will be further accented with indigenous and colorful landscaping.

One course will always be open for play; consequently, remodeling of the East Course and practice facility will start in November of 2006.  The East course design, crafted by former PGA player John Fought, will incorporate elaborate bunkering, large greens and wide, sweeping fairways, created to enhance not only play, but the scenic mountain vistas beyond.  The entire renovation project is scheduled for completion in December of 2007.

The entire Golf Course refurbishment is slated to cost $45 million. $20 million plus contingencies will go towards reconstruction of the two courses and practic area; the remainder will fund the refurbishment of the clubhouse and reconfiguration of the Golf Resort entry and infrastructure.  The project is being funded by monies from the city’s general fund, cash reserves from the city’s Redevelopment Agency, and revenue from redevelopment bonds.

The City of Indian Wells has embarked on this enterprising modernization strategy to further ensure the city’s economic future, which relies heavily on tourism-related revenues; to bring the Golf Resort on par with the surrounding luxury resorts; and to continue to provide the ultimate golf and resort experience for which Indian Wells has become recognized worldwide.
