Katie Elliott, one shot out of the lead halfway through the round, surged in front midway of the back nine, then put on exclamation point on her performance with birdies at two of the last three holes in the fifth annual Ladies Publinx Championship, July10, at Forest Park Golf Course,
The result for the 20-year-old University of Maryland senior was a 1-over-par 38-34--72, and a whopping seven--stroke victory over Shirley Williams, 37-42--79. Nikea Peay, a recent Poly graduate headed for Jackson State, was third,
The winning score and margin of triumph were records for the event. Shirley Keeney had a 74 in the 2000 inaugural, and the previous 1-2 difference was two shots on two occasions..
Elliott, the 2001 champion, who had tied with Williams for second at 77 last year, struggled with, "a bunch of three-putts," in posting five bogeys to go with six birdies. She caught Williams with a birdie at the 12th, and at that point, "my swing deserted me," Williams, winner of the recent Cumberland Invitation, said of a closing stretch that included two doubles and two bogeys. Elliott highlighted her finish by rolling in a 40-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole.
The gross leaders in the other two flights each had a memorable round. Andrea Morgan had a competitive best of 47-42--89 to earn low gross in the first flight, and Mattie Gaines, a 31-handicapper, took the second flight with a career-best 47-48--95.

2003 Baltimore Ladies Publinx Championship
Arlene Zamora made the third annual Ladies Publinx championship her first tournament victory when she shot 35-40--75 at Forest Park Golf Course. A runner-up by one stroke each of the last two years, Zamora won by two shots.
Katie Elliott, the inaugural champion, and Shirley Williams each returned 77's, and Elliott won the playoff with an eight-foot birdie putt at the third extra hole. There was a playoff for low net in the flight, with Tara Kramer winning over Megan Harrell with a par on the second extra hole after each had ended with 70's.
Barbara Kimball, 39-43--82, and B.B. LaMartina,89-23-66, were second flight winners; Christine Brooks, 51-45--96, and Chris DeLuca, who used a career round for 101-32-69 were third flight winners, and, for the second straight year Karen Adamski won the Callaway flight, 102-26-76.
Zamora had two front-nine birdies in dipping one under par, then struggled a bit on the back nine where she incurred a penalty for dislodging a leaf during a stroke
on the 16th hole and then double-bogeyed the 18th.
Elliott had 38-37 that included a birdie at the 14th and pars the rest of the way. Williams shot 37-40, but most of the damage came after injuring her hip on the 12th hole. She tripled the 13th and bogeyed the 14th, then parred in from there.
