Joseph Fryer wins Seattle Amateur Golf Championship at record 12-under par

Joseph Fryer, who signed a letter of intent to play golf this coming fall at Western Washington University, finished off a dominating victory Friday in the 80th Seattle Amateur.

Fryer fired a 3-under-par 69 on the 6,800-yard West Seattle course in the third round and finished at a record 12-under 200 to win by six strokes. Fryer, who plays out of Harbour Pointe, led Kamiak High to the state Class 4A title in 2012 by finishing 10th individually, and has spent the past two years attending the Lee Westwood Golf Academy in England.

Tied for second were Andrew Whalen (67 Friday, the low round of the day), who plays for Northwestern, and Erik Olson (68), the 2004 champion.

After the first two rounds at Jefferson Park and Jackson Park, Fryer had a one-stroke lead over Grant Cole of Tam O’Shanter in Bellevue. Cole slipped to a 75 Friday, opening the path for Fryer’s easy victory.

Cole finished fourth at 207 while Sandy Vaughan (a 74 Friday), the 2012 champion, and Mark Strickland (72) of Western Washington University tied for fifth place.

Tyler Salsbury (71) of the University of Washington golf team was alone in seventh at 209.

Salsbury and Fryer were the only players under par in each of their three rounds this week.

West Seattle Amateur Results

The Professional Staff at West Seattle GC conducted the West Seattle Amateur over the weekend of 7/19 &7/20 and hosted 160 players competing in 4 divisions. The field was especially strong this year as the breakdown to get into the first division was a 1.3 USGA Index and over half of the field had handicaps less than 5.  We want to congratulate our 2014 Champion John D'Amelio as he posted a winning score of 8-under par (photo attached) and narrowly beating runner up Matt O'Brien by two shots.  We would like to congratulate the winners in each of the other divisions:

B – Low Gross  Ty Cannon / Low Net Ira Armad
C – Low Gross Carter Tillotson / Low Net Mike Phipps
D - Low Gross Duong Tran / Low Net Dave Schilling.

Thank you to John Price and all of his staff in presenting the course so nicely during this busy tournament month.
